The Science of Human Intelligence in Vedic Knowledge
This article is subsequent to the article
“The Scientific Foundations of Sanatan Dharma”.
Those readers who have not understood the foundations should read the first article and then come to this article.
Intelligence is at the Core Fundamental of all creations
In the previous article when we look at the reference picture which I am giving here again, we see that the entire process of life starts with a field of intelligence. This field of intelligence in turn is generated by the interactions of the fields of Brahm, the field of Knowledge and Time. This is the second step of creation of existence. The word ‘Ahankar’ is used in place of the word ‘buddhi’ because it is a mix of three types of intelligence that is Satwa, Rajas and Tamas.
The third step is creation of the three powers of intelligence. These are generated in three types
1. Vaikarik Intelligence
2. Taijas Intelligence and
3. Tamas Intelligence
And all creation is the result of these three intelligences.
While the Tamas intelligence creates the physical materials and is the power behind the physical materials, the Taijas intelligence is the power that causes the action or the Karma to take place and the Vaikarik intelligence is the power that causes the generation of all knowledge.
Out of these the field of Tamas intelligence produces the physical materials together with the senses.
Senses in Hindu texts have been described as ‘Indriya’ which is beyond just ‘feeling’ for example the speech.
See These Videos.
Intelligence Woven into Speech
The first physical creation is that of space, mentioned as Aakash in the scriptures. The first Indriya that is created together with creation of space, is the organ of speech. And the ‘Quality’ or ‘Guna’ that is created with this indriya is the ‘alphabet’. It is too complex to understand for anyone. But let us proceed with this. Later as the knowledge is gained this would be understood.
This is not philosophy. This is the first step of pure physical creation that has been described in Hindu texts.
The readers should note that all life, repeat all life has no meaning without the power of speech, this is especially true for human beings and speech.
Also note that human speech is intrinsically integral with
intelligence <> thought <> alphabets <> words <> speech
All these five are intrinsically integrated. The latter cannot occur without the previous and is fundamental to every aspect of life.
The thought and speech are also fundamental to all Karma.
According to ancient Hindu scriptures, humans are bound to perform Karma. Everything that you see in this world is the result of someone’s Karma at sometime in the past.
Note how intimately is intelligence woven with speech.
We have already described all the steps to creation of physical materials in the previous article.

Purpose of Life is Exactly Defined in Hindu Texts
Modern science has not been able to define the purpose of all life.
Therefore, modern science and Western cultures consider the purpose of all human life to be just generation and accumulation of wealth and enjoying life to the fullest and removing all controls over the senses. In fact, modern lifestyle preaches that a person must devote all thought and wealth to the satisfaction of the senses.
Ancient Hindu sciences are sharp in contrast to the outlook of the Western culture and exactly defines the purpose of human life. This has been defined in Devi Bhagwat Puran. The purpose of life has been defined as
1. Raising of own Intelligence and
2. Generating Knowledge with this raised Intelligence.

Core Practices of Sanatan Hindu Dharma
When we look at the core practices of Sanatan Dharma they are in the following specific sequence:
1. Improving one’s character by adopting the five fundamental principles of being human in real life. Also following Yam Niyam.
2. Developing control over the mind with the practice of Dhyana.
3. Improving the course of life by following and performing Vedic practices. See in Detail Here.
4. With this improved and controlled mind, perform Karma to generate knowledge. See These Videos.
Where does Intelligence Reside?
When we research Shrimad Bhagwad Gita, we find that Bhagwan Krishna says that the intelligence as well as the knowledge resides in the Soul and not in the physical body or brain. This soul does not die with the physical body.
See the videos Mysterious Soul
Therefore, the intelligence and knowledge at the time of death is retained in the soul. The soul is the carrier of intelligence and knowledge. This soul takes birth again in another physical body or adopts another physical body with the same intelligence and knowledge.
This process continues endlessly till the soul has been ‘purified’ and reaches 'salvation'.
How the soul can be purified?
Since the primary constituent of the soul is the intelligence, purification of the soul directly means purification of intelligence. Purification of the soul means purification of the intelligence.
This is also confirmed by the practices that are prescribed in Hindu scriptures. All the Sanatan Hindu practices work towards correction of intelligence, gaining of knowledge and creation of knowledge.
Let us see this in greater detail.
An average human across anywhere in the world and who has never been trained spiritually is naturally prone to satisfy the senses. This is natural as basic instincts of thirst, food, sleep, shelter and sex are natural and powerful. Satisfying the basic instincts is important and undeniable to sustain life.
This is true for all types of life forms including humans.
Where the Problems Begin?
The problems begin when while the basic instincts or the wants have been met the desire to have more takes over.
Such as when just plain water is not sufficient to satisfy your thirst, you start to demand more. This can be fulfilled through opting for juices, cold drinks, liquor and so on.
Similarly, when just plain simple food is no longer sufficient and the person starts to demand more exotic foods in the name of health, taste, luxury and so on.
Similarly for sex, when one partner is not enough, and a person demands more partners for various reasons.
Similarly for sleep, when a simple bed is no longer acceptable, and more comfort is demanded in the name of better sleep. This is true for all the senses.
The reality is that the senses continue to demand more and more, and a person spends his or her entire lifetime in fulfilling the desires generated by the senses. The entire lifetime passes but the desires for ‘more’ never come to an end.
And to fulfill these desires, a person goes to any extent. This extent can be breaching faith and honesty and committing all sorts of small crimes to big crimes to heinous crimes.
Also, these can extend from ordinary individuals to the most powerful politicians and wealthy people and is applicable to all.
This is highly visible especially in the modern world. The individuals are striving to make more money by any means whatsoever, businesses are supposed to to increase their turnover, wealth and profits every year with no upper limits, politicians want more and more power and wealth by each passing day, leaders of countries are wanting to be the most powerful in the world and retain that power and so on. And this is being followed no holds barred with or without ethics.
This is also leading to increasing crimes and wars all over the world. This is happening for all of us to see in reality.
What Hindu Scriptures Say?
According to ancient Hindu texts, there is no end to the desires a person can have. More you satisfy a sense the more it will demand.
For example, a person having no means of transport and forced to walk will be happy to have a bicycle. When he gets a bicycle, his satisfaction will not last very long, then he will want a motorcycle.
Again, he would not be satisfied for too long, then he would want a car, and this pursuit will never end. The same example can be repeated for food, drink, comfort in life.
The very first Hindu spiritual teaching, therefore, begins with prescribing the following of certain principles to live peacefully and amicably in a civilized society. These are the five fundamental principles of being human.
In short these are speaking and following truth always, not tormenting or killing any innocent living being, not thieving, not having more than one life partner and practicing celibacy up to the education age and not usurping other people’s wealth and properties.

In addition, there are certain other rules as well prescribed to be followed such as not developing ego, not being angry, having patience and so on. These have been defined as Yam and Niyams in Hindu scriptures.

Where are all the Wants and Desires Generated?
All the wants and desires are first generated in human brain or intelligence. This intelligence is what drives a person through the lifetime. Uncontrolled desires mean uncontrolled intelligence.
The Steps to Control Human Intelligence
The first step towards controlled intelligence is following a set of rules as described above in Hindu texts. Remember, that following certain rules is an indirect control over your urges and therefore intelligence. This is the first step of the four steps indicated previously.
The second step is that of direct control of your intelligence, and this is by the process of Dhyana.
In Shrimad Bhagwad Gita Bhagwan Krishna says that a control over your mind CAN be developed through practice. And this is the practice of Dhyana.
Remember, your intelligence takes decisions, and the intelligence then drives the mind. The mind drives the physical organs to take some action.
In the practice of Dhyana, you forcibly focus your mind on a divine image. The mind wanders, but you again bring it back to the divine image. In real practice, this is together with silent chanting of a Mantra. See details here.
So, by this practice any human can start to develop control over the mind and therefore, over the Intelligence.
So, we see that both the first and second practices are processes to develop control over your own intelligence and in this manner, you are also able to get a control over your desires, control over your intelligence and slowly you therefore gain control over your own life because life is driven by individual intelligence.
Bhagwan Krishna also says that it is easy to control the wind but difficult to control the mind. These practices are required to be followed throughout life. Because otherwise the mind tends to get astray again. Fundamentally what we are doing through these practices is developing a control over your intelligence.
All Physical Materials and Beings Created from Tamas Intelligence
In the picture above we also see that all physical materials and therefore all living beings and therefore all human beings have been created by ‘Tamas’ intelligence. This is the basic cause why all human races are dominated by the ‘Tamas’ intelligence.
In the Hindu society, Tamas is normally associated with eating non vegetarian foods. However, this is not how Tamas intelligence has been defined in Shrimad Bhagwad Gita.
This is a quality of intelligence and so, let us briefly look at how qualities of intelligence have been defined in Shrimad Bhagwad Gita.
In Hindu knowledge systems, intelligence of any individual is a combination of three types of intelligences. Satwa, Rajas and Tamas. Any individual’s intelligence is a mix of all three types. These qualities are also very dynamic all the time. Meaning the levels of these qualities continuously changes in any human being, lower or higher. Sometimes Satwa dominates over Tamas and at times Tamas dominates over Satwa. In both cases while changing, these pass through the Rajas state. Let us briefly look at what these three qualities mean.
According to Shrimad Bhagwad Gita, Satwa quality is that which can differentiate between what is duty and what is not duty, which can differentiate between who is an enemy and who is not an enemy and that which can differentiate between what is good for a person and what is not.
Shrimad Bhagwad Gita never talks about eating or not eating non vegetarian foods. A person who knows these differences is said to be dominated by the Satwa intelligence.
Tamas intelligence is just the opposite of the above three. Meaning an intelligence that understands what is not duty to be the duty, considering the enemy to be the friend and friend to be the enemy and who understands what is not good for the person to be of good to him.
Rajas intelligence is that intelligence which is not sure about all of the three above. Which is more in a confused state, not sure whether to follow the Satwa intelligence or the Tamas intelligence.
Fundamentally Most Important Aspect to Understand
Since, average human intelligence is dominated by Tamas intelligence, all Hindu practices are towards the primary objective of human life, that of converting this Tamas intelligence into Satwa intelligence.
What is Raised or Higher Intelligence?
Converting Tamas intelligence into Satwa intelligence through the Rajas intelligence is the primary objective of human life as defined in the Hindu scriptures.
Those who are able to understand all this and take the path towards Satwa intelligence, that also ultimately leads to Moksha or salvation, sets on the right path in life. By following this path, the life of the individual also starts to improve multifold. This path towards higher intelligence leads to that ‘Raised’ intelligence or higher intelligence that all the scriptures talk about.
The Mantras and other Vedic practices come much later.
Also, one can be successful in Mantras and other Vedic practices only if the intelligence has been raised. If the correct path as described HERE is not followed, then all Vedic practices will not give any results. This is very important to understand. This is important to understand and follow.
In the present times while people are running to Vedic practices and Mantra recitals, these fundamental principles are not followed. Therefore, it is doubtful that any Vedic practice will give them any formidable result. But if the correct path is followed then the Vedic practices give magical results.
No contemporary Guru has emphasized upon this important fact. While Shrimad Bhagwad Gita extensively talks about developing superior intelligence and explains different aspects of ‘Buddhi’ or intelligence. Again, no modern-day Guru talks about developing superior intelligence.
Raised Intelligence to Perform Your Karma
The second objective of all human life as described in Hindu scriptures is to generate knowledge with this raised intelligence by performing Karma, your everyday activities and your professional activities.
Your Karma is all the activities you perform throughout the day in the living life. The Karma includes both your personal activities as well as your professional activities.
So, all these activities need to be performed with ‘raised’ intelligence.
If the intelligence has not been raised, then you will continue to face problems in life and you will not be able to achieve the goals that you are born for.
An average person connects ‘raising’ of intelligence with being pious or religious. But does not realize that raised intelligence is the prime requirement for every activity in real life including the professional life. This has resulted in rampant corruption everywhere including the Government offices, businesses and even personal life. This is leading to widespread problems related to individuals, societies and nations.
What is Generation of Knowledge?
In whichever profession you are, you are required to solve some small or big problem. In jobs you are hired to continuously provide solutions to a host of problems occurring day to day in that institution.
Businesses are required to solve problems. If a customer wants to buy a service or product, businesses are expected to solve problems by providing service or the product.
In research institutions, the generation of knowledge is real.
This is performing Karma to generate knowledge.
Intelligence Required at Every Instance
When we go deep, we find that human intelligence is required at every step in life. For each and every activity that anyone anywhere in the world, belonging to any society, creed or nationality has to perform every work even to maintain own body.
Karma is not a religious notion limited to Hindus.
And behind all Karma, it is the intelligence that is working.
Sanatan Hindu Dharma
It is an indispensable fact that it is the intelligence of every human that is behind any work the person is doing.
The entire path of Sanatan Dharma is to correct and enhance this human intelligence. Prayers to Gods is an advanced subject of study and practices in Sanatan Hindu scriptures. These Vedic practices do not give any results without correction of intelligence.
Therefore, stepping into Vedic practices is futile if you have not gone through the preliminary steps as indicated on the page of Complete Path of Sanatan Dharma.

Conclusion
We have seen in essence that according to Hindu scriptures the entire process of life itself commences from a field of intelligence.
Thereafter, the objectives of human life that have been defined in ancient Hindu texts are clearly first to raise the intelligence by the process of correction and enhancement and then to generate knowledge. Both again are subjects of human intelligence.
Therefore, the entire process of Vedic practices also first aims at correction of individual intelligence and then to enhance it.
Prayers to God Almighty and Devi Devatas are a process to make human life better by providing divine help in real life. But the divine help is only possible once a person has raised his or her level of intelligence by correction and enhancement.
Sanatan Hindu Dharma is therefore a complete path to a fulfilled and prosperous living by the correction and enhancement of intelligence. This path also leads to salvation.
